Chimes

One of the classical Feng Shui cures, wind chimes are as effective and pretty now as they were thousands of years ago in China. They are easy to adapt in contemporary homes and they do especially well outdoors in gardens.

They are available in many different shapes and sizes, but it is vital that they are made of metal to produce a pure metallic sound. After all, it is this metallic sound that works as a cure against the inauspicious earth star 5.

However, it is of no great importance how many tubes they have, but the size of the chime should be in proportion to the size of the room. Sometimes six tubes are prefered, representing the Metal element, particularly when curing the Yellow 5 Danger star in Flying Star Feng Shui. It is also important that the sound is pleasant to our ears since it will effect our nervous system.

Whenever wind chimes are in use, they should be integrated with the interior in such a way that they should not look strange or out of place. This is the case with all the other classical Feng Shui cures. Anything that makes the home look like a Chinese restaurant should be avoided.

Plants

Cacti are fine outdoors in the garden. But one should be careful about using them indoors as they can create so-called Knife or Arrow-Chi. This would be disturbing only if the plant is very big. It is perfectly allright to use small decorative pots of cacti indoors.

In Flying Stars practice, bright coloured flowers and green leafy plants are perfect to encourage the prosperous and timely stars 8 and 9. In the Eight Mansions School, plants are believed to activate the East and Southeast sectors of the Bagua. In my experience though, this activation will only take place when these particular sectors have good Water stars, as I mentioned earlier. Silk flowers can be used where it is impractical to use fresh flowers.

But dried flowers should be avoided since they emit yin (dead) energy, and also by gathering a lot of dust they create a stagnant pool of Chi around them.

Not only plants and fresh flowers, but all living things, such as fish in aquaria and other pets freshen up Chi. Traditionally, the most popular are goldfish in a combination of eight red and one black.

Mirrors:

Mirrors are said to be the aspirin of Feng Shui. In the Flying Star school, mirrors can be used to increase the impact of prosperous water stars. If they are placed on a wall, reflecting the auspicious water stars, they can double up the prosperity of the household. However, one has to make sure though that the mirrors don’t bring in inauspicious features from outside, such as poison arrows and other physical shars.

It is best to hang a mirror at such a height so that it will at least reflect the whole image of the tallest person in the house.

Mirrors are better with a solid frame so as to avoid sharp edges.

Mirrors in the bedroom are something of a controversy. Some experts say they are fine in the bedroom if they are not too large. It is generally accepted that it is best to avoid large mirrors reflecting the bed, since this can effect the quality of sleep, and in the long run the general health can suffer.

Mirrors activate Chi and active Chi can make it hard to fall asleep. Poor quality sleep, if experienced night after night, will certainly damage the health.

Tiled mirrors are a Feng Shui nightmare, as are smoked and tinted varieties.

Mirror tiles fragment the reflected image, and smoky glass distorts it. This in turn can have a negative effect on self esteem.

Something should be said about antique mirrors as well. If they are damaged and distorted they can also damage one’s self image and should therefore be replaced with new ones.

Concave mirrors are usually used pointing towards ugly or offensive structures outside, such as sharp corners, buildings resembling fierce animals and so on. Convex mirrors are somehow more difficult to use for Feng Shui purposes as they can be too powerful.

There are also Bagua mirrors with a round mirror in the middle, surrounded by the eight trigrams of the I Ching. Unfortunately, I have seen these used carelessly against ones neighbours, offending and scaring them, worsening ones relationships with the neighbours and worst of all giving Feng Shui practices a bad name. Bagua mirrors are considered to be very powerful tools, and as it is said that improper use can cause serious complications, they are usually best avoided. .

Crystals

The most useful variety for Feng Shui purposes are made of lead crystal and are spherical. They work best in windows where they can catch daylight and refract it into a room. In the practices of the Eight Mansions School, they are believed to enhance the relationship area (of the eight areas mentioned above) of the Bagua, since they represent the Earth element. However during my practices and research into the Eight Mansions School for over a decade, I found that this will only happen when the relevant palace (sector) coincides with with a prosperous Flying Star.

They stimulate Chi with the light they catch, and spread and enhance it in rainbow refractions through the living space, bringing enhanced vitality. In Flying star school, they are wonderfull encouraging current prosperity star 8. They can also be used as a supportive decoration for people with Kua numbers 2 and 8. However, too many crystals in inaproppriate areas will cause more harm than benefit. I often find myself in a “crystal clearing” mission of wrongly placed crystals that ofset the balance in homes of my clients. Moving them to appropriate sectors immediately restores the balance and the difference can be felt right away.

Other types of natural crystals such as quartz or amethyst can be also used for the same purpose.

Lights

Natural daylight is very important, especially in winter.

Chi goes very still in dark places, and darkness is certainly appropriate in restful and relaxing environments, such as bedrooms or restaurants. But where we work we need more active Chi, and this usually means more light, and preferably more natural daylight.

Humans need light, and we are as dependent on light as we are on food. Just as we are careful about what we eat, so we should be more aware of the quality of light in the environment.

Fluorescent light sources are the worst and unfortunately the most common source of lighting in work places and schools. The flickering effect of fluorescent tubes is said to be able to drain peoples’ energy and weaken the immune system.

It should be very simple to replace fluorescent tubes with full spectrum lights, and this would significantly improve light quality. Research done in the U.S.A. has shown that school children perform better and have fewer headaches with full spectrum lights.

It is also usually quite simple to improve the quantity of natural daylight in a home. Modern homes do not have issues with draughts, and so it is possible to make more use of sheer fabrics as curtains.

With thicker fabrics, we should use as much of the wall space to park the curtains during the day in order to maximise the natural inflow of daylight.

Heavy Objects

All big and heavy things such as statues, sofas and cupboards fall into this category. They anchor and ground the energy and represent strength and stability. Tall cupboards and book shelves can be used as perfect support for good Mountain Stars in Flying Star Feng Shui.

Unfortunately, these heavy objects can cause as many problems as they solve if they are misplaced! For example, in a bed room where harmful Mountain Stars 2 and 5 are active, a metal wind chime will be recommended to decrease their ill effects. Placing a tall heavy cupboard in this sector will make the situation much worse, by supporting the bad stars and diminishing the impact of the cure used.

Another example of wrong use of tall and heavy objects would be to have them in areas where they obstruct prosperous Water stars. However, they are perfect for obstructing or trapping bad and untimely Water stars.

Water Features

In old China, water in the form of rain meant more rice, and more rice meant more money. This could be one of the reasons why the water element is so often associated with wealth.

Water can have a relaxing and beneficial effect as well, for example in an indoor fountain, especially if water is one of your favourable elements and the water feature is placed correctly – in accordance with prosperous Water stars.

One could easily build one of these fountains by using an aquarium pump and beach or river stones in a beautiful bowl.

As with other basic Feng Shui cures, the placement is of vital importance with all water features. They can do more harm than good if they are wrongly placed.

Large swimming pools and ponds in areas with negative Water Stars can cause many problems. But they bring greate prosperity and good luck when they are placed together with good and timely Water stars.

Water features are used in the Eight Mansions School of Feng Shui to activate the North and Southeast Sectors of the Bagua of a property  (mind you, the impact of this is not beyond dispute.)

Symbolic Objects

Paintings, photographs, other art work and all handmade articles can also activate Chi. But one has to be careful with the symbolism. Study your pictures carefully.

What do they say to you? Are they optimistic? A very valuable piece of art may not necessarily have a positive symbolism and consequently be totally useless or even harmful from a Feng Shui point of view.

Our pictures communicate with us the whole time through symbolism, which is the language of the subconscious.

Abstract art can have its limitations as well. Our subconscious has problems interpreting its symbolism and can get rather confused. However, if it makes us smile or the colours make us feel good, it is fine.

While the planets deal first and foremost with energies and basic human urges and the signs reveal the style in which these planetary energies manifest, the houses of the horoscope represent experiences that are actualized through the material realm.

First House

The first house represents the physical plane of experience that deals with the totality of the individual. It represents the physical body in general and the general constitution. It is a very significant house in that it deals with what others pick up about you; that all important first impression. It represents some of the very early childhood experiences that shaped your self image and your outlook on life. Look at planets in this house and/or it’s cusp ruling planet to get a feel for the individual life approach.

Second House

Fourth House

On the physical plane, the fourth house is primarily associated with our home base and the mother. However, not everyone had the influence of a mother and in this case the fourth house can be relied on to bring insights into our childhood upbringing and the environment we were raised in. The foundation which was laid for our emotional stability and ability to cope with challenges later in life may be revealed by studying the condition of the fourth house.

Sixth House

The sixth house represents the area of work. To expand this idea further, we can include our employees if we have them and co-workers. The work found in the sixth house is work that is necessary, and so everyday chores and daily routines are to be found here, along with service to others and volunteer work. Service to others can run the gamut from nurses to politicians. Politicians often have an active sixth house. Jobs that we take to survive are also described by the sixth house. This is the house of physical labor as well. In order to be able to use our body to perform physical labor, we must take care of it and so the sixth house is also diet, your attitude towards food, health issues and personal hygiene. The sign Virgo suggests discrimination and so these traits are useful when we’re making decisions about what to put into our bodies.

Small animals, the weather and clothing are other sixth house areas. An area that doesn’t get much attention is the sixth house relation to old relatives in general. One astrologer I know reads it as “family karma.” It does seem to be a valid definition.

The sixth house corresponds to Virgo and so any planets in this house function with some underlying Virgo style. Additionally, the sixth house also represents categorizing and order, worry and concern, self-improvement and using powers of discernment.

Seventh House

Since the first house represents you; the seventh house being directly opposite the first is other people in general. Look at the seventh house for clues about what other people send out to you based on what you send out via your first house? Committed relationships are found here, along with the contracts and legal obligations which often form them, though there are exceptions to this rule. For instance, best friends form a kind of committed relationship that exists outside of legal documents. Marriage and business partners are legal commitments. Here also, is where we find those who might openly oppose us. Someone who is willing to take you to court to file a lawsuit against you, must do so openly as opposed to behind the scenes. Therefore, lawsuits are a seventh house area. Again, as with legal commitments, this opposition may not always take the form of an actual lawsuit. Traits from your first house that need to be balanced are often acted out by those who are opposite to us. For example; a Libra rising person who is too willing to please, may pull in aggressive or selfish partners, shown by the Aries seventh house cusp. If you repress a particular trait, then that too is often acted out for us by our closest partners.

Eighth House

Several areas fall under the rule of the eighth house. Sex and sexual intimacy are eighth house matters. Note the word intimate. The eighth house may reveal one’s ability to share deep, intimate bonding with another person. Because of this, the eighth house is also connected to the popular notion of meeting one’s soul-mate.

The eighth house is the house of major lifestyle changes. Whatever planets fall into this house will be completely transformed in some way and the individual’s approach to the things represented by that planet emerge drastically altered. Surgery is associated with the eighth house. Death and all matters pertaining to death belong to the eighth house.

Inheritances, other people’s money in general and the spouses money are eighth house matters. If the seventh house is equivalent to the partners first house in your chart, then your eighth house represents their second house and thus, their finances.

Support from others both financial and moral and the value system of others are eighth house issues.

The occult is normally associated with the eighth house. In this case, occult refers to the manipulation of natural or psychic forces in order to produce desired outcomes. Mysteries, magic, secrets, ulterior motives and the investigation of these things are all eighth house matters.

Hence, the tenth house is also described as one’s fame, reputation, honor and highest achievements. It’s also the boss; either your attitude towards the authority of others, or you as the authority. When you think of the tenth house, think of traditional institutions that have withstood the test of time. Government and political aims naturally fall into the domain of the tenth house. The tenth house is the public eye vs. the fourth which is your private life. Traditional astrology teaches us that the tenth house is the house that represents the father, based on the fourth house as mother and the tenth being opposite the fourth represents her spouse. I have often found that an accurate description of the father is described by the fifth house. In fact, astrologers have varying opinions concerning which house represents which parent, with some believing that the tenth is mother and the fourth is father. Stick with the traditional meaning to start and experiment if you wish with the other ideas on this matter.

Eleventh House

Traditionally the eleventh house is related to friendships and acquaintances, though generally not as close as those we consider to be best friends. A less considered aspect of these relationships, but one that I have found to be true is the following; that because of the ancient rulership of Saturn, the friendships found in the eleventh house often have a kind of “karmic alliance” tone to them. These types of relationships form in order to evolve both parties, based on past life issues together.

Our personal hopes and wishes is another eleventh house area. Groups of people in general, especially those groups which have a common bond or goal are found in the eleventh house. This can include, humanitarian causes, clubs and social organizations of any kind. Science, technology, computers, airplanes and all things that represent either ideas that are ahead of the times, or progress for mankind are eleventh house areas. This is the house of ingenious ideas and new inventions. Some of these new ideas upset long held traditional viewpoints and so this is the house of the revolutionary. The individual who may be forced into a kind of self imposed isolation because he finds it difficult to march to the same drumbeat as everyone else. This could also refer to the leader who has the ability to inspire action in others, and yet because he is the leader, he feels inside that he must maintain a kind of solitary detachment. In this case, intimate or deeply personal entanglements are simply too messy for those who must manage large groups of people.

The eleventh house corresponds to Aquarius and so any planets in this house function with some underlying Aquarius style. Additionally, the eleventh house represents bizarre circumstances, being or feeling different from the “norm”, rebelliousness, and unexpected events.

Twelfth House

Here in the twelfth house we find areas of life that tend to place one away from the rest of society. Hence, this house is most commonly known as the house of large public institutions, hospitals, prisons and asylums. Monasteries naturally fall into this category, as well. Sometimes this isolation is self imposed. A writer who needs long periods of uninterrupted time is an example of self imposed isolation. A hospital stay is not usually a self imposed situation.

You will often see the phrases behind-the-scenes or hidden from view used in connection with twelfth house matters. This covers a fairly large area of potential experiences. That which is purposefully deceptive as well as, actions taken for the sake of simply doing rather than for glory or recognition. The latter leading naturally to altruistic acts of helpfulness and kindness, in which the act itself is the sole reward. Hidden enemies are in the twelfth house as opposed to the open opposition in the seventh house.

Any planets in this house may represent something that the individual either doesn’t have a clear view of or doesn’t want a clear view of. The edges of reality become blurred, allowing one to exist in the more ideal scenario that one creates on the mental plane. Or, in other cases, the use of addictive substances or self indulgent habits that allow a person to escape unpleasant realities for the time being, though never eliminating the source of pain is another possible manifestation of this reality avoidance syndrome.

Traditionally this is the house of suffering and self undoing. You’ve probably seen this already. What exactly does it mean? It means this. How do you tangle up your own web? Look at planets in this house and the sign on the twelfth house cusp. Do you avoid reality? Do you lack boundaries with respect to these things? And what about the suffering part? Do the answers to any of the former create problems for you? Does guilt, repression, or self-doubt play a role?

This is also the house of spiritual inspiration, cosmic consciousness and enlightenment. Addicts who join support groups are often strongly encouraged to put their faith in a higher power. Even those who doubt the existence of God, can find comfort in tuning into the notion of a higher power. The spirituality found in the twelfth house is more in tune with what some might call “Universal Consciousness.” Religious dogma is dissolved along with the boundaries that separate us from other dimensions. Psychic channeling and miraculous healing are higher potentials found in the twelfth house.

While the interpretations of the Tarot cards can differ from tarot reader to tarot reader, there are many universal themes that remain constant. The more knowledge you have about the Tarot’s imagery and symbolism, the easier it will be to grasp their meanings.

Before we move on, however, I would first recommend getting to know your cards intimately. Keep a tarot journal. It is totally acceptable to invent your own tarot meanings. The best tarot readers are the ones that utilize free association. Free association is similar to the concept of a stream of consciousness. During this process you allow your mind to gather information about the cards without any judgment or hesitation. Your ability to read the cards of the Tarot will largely depend on your own intuition. The more you become familiar with the cards, the easier it will be to identify their symbolism and meanings. As I have discussed before, these are images that reflect universal themes. In tarot reading, it is just as important to be familiar with tarot symbolism as it is to trust your intuition.

Now let’s move on. As a beginning tarot reader, I was fortunate to have worked with an expert. She identified elements in the Tarot Cards that had illustrative themes. She taught me how to recognize the significance of distinctive features that comprise the overall picture on each card. After years of study, I have broken these features down into four categories: animals, colors, the landscape, and the distinctive imagery that appears throughout the tarot. It is important to note that there are hundreds of tarot decks. Obviously not all decks have the same imagery. Often, the artist and/or author will develop their own imagery that reflects their interpretation of specific tarot card meanings. That’s what makes the tarot such a fascinating tool for divination. The symbolic interpretations that I will provide are really just suggestions. Ultimately, you, as the tarot reader, will have to rely on your own associations for the tarot cards.

Animals In Tarot Reading

Let’s begin with animals. Animals reflect our instinctive natures. They can expose our primal needs, desires and behaviors. In a tarot reading, animals offer insight into our characters, often shedding light on how are natures and behaviors are influencing a situation.

Birds: Birds are associated with thoughts and spiritual aspirations. Birds in flight represent freedom from limitation.

Bull: Bulls are associated with power, fertility, permanence, charging ahead, and generosity. They can also be associated with stubbornness and denial. Whenever you see a bull in tarot reading, there is typically an association to powerful forces working in ones life.

Butterflies: The image of transformation. Butterflies may indicate a change of thought, change of action, or change of circumstance.

Fields: New opportunities, the beginning of a new endeavor, fertile ground, creative efforts and hard work. Fields may also indicate the fruition of one’s labor and/or actions.

Flowers: Birth, happiness, joy, friendship, giving and receiving.

Flowers are also associated with attainment and beauty.

Horizon: The horizon line typically indicates what is in consciousness and what remains in the unconscious.

Lightening: A moment of truth, divine intervention, being struck into consciousness. In a tarot reading, lightening may indicate the need to let go of old ideas.

Mountains: Obstacles, conflicts, life transitions, abstract thoughts. Mountains can indicate that there is spiritual lesson that must be learned. Mountains also refer to the attainment of one’s goals.

Moon: Karma, fate, femininity, intuition. When there is moon in your tarot card reading, it may suggest that you must move into a new level of awareness. The moon signifies the onset of a new phase in ones life.

Paths: The direction of your actions, the karmic journey, the distance it takes to complete a goal or assignment. Paths can also indicate beginnings and endings.

Rain: Catharsis, detoxification, grief, tears, somber meditation, the need for acceptance.

Rocks: Small obstacles, difficult relationships, unforeseen complications. In tarot readings, rocks may also denote denial of a current circumstance or relationship.

Lantern: Search for truth, enlightenment, the presence of the divine in a difficult time, self-exploration, the journey of self-discovery.

Pitcher: The things that you hold dear to you. Purity, nourishment, transformation, and sustenance.

Scale: Balance and equality. Scales can refer to where one is ignoring certain aspects of their life that require attention.

Shield: Guarded, protection, hidden aspects of ourselves. The shield often informs us where we need to restrain from our overindulgences.
